Dunn was born in Medina, Ohio, and grew up in Williamsville, New York, before moving to West Chester, Pennsylvania, with his parents at age 15 where he met Bam Margera on his first day of high school.
Dunn, Margera, Christopher Raab (known as Raab Himself) and Brandon DiCamillo, under the moniker CKY for "Camp Kill Yourself," started making videos that featured them skateboarding and performing stunts.
Dunn was working as a welder and at a gas station when Knoxville, a friend of Margera's through the skateboarding circuit, asked the crew to allow their videos to be part of the series "Jackass," which became a hit on MTV and ran from 2000 to 2002.
Perhaps his most famous stunt, in 2002's "Jackass: The Movie," involved inserting a toy car into his rectum and going to an emergency room, where he made up a story that he was in mysterious pain after passing out at a fraternity party. Dunn's X-ray from the hospital became a popular T-shirt with "Jackass" fans.
On June 20, 2011, at approximately 3:30 a.m. EDT, Dunn died in a car crash in West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania, when his 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 slid off the road, hit a tree, and burst into flames. Reports from TMZ state that he posted a photo of himself drinking with friends a few hours before onto Twitter. Police said that Dunn was probably speeding at the time of the accident. An unidentified occupant of the vehicle was also found dead at the scene. WKST-FM reported that both men had suffered severe burns; Dunn was reportedly identified by his tattoos and facial hair.

I honestly can’t believe you’re gone. When I first found out that you died, I was in total shock. I couldn’t believe it. Then it really hit me; it broke my heart…I can’t stop crying right now. I’m going to miss you so damn much. On the CKY movies, Haggard, Jackass and Viva la Bam you always made me laugh. I’m going to miss that the most. I’m going to miss your witty, sarcastic remarks. One of my favorite Ryan Dunn moments was in viva la bam when they celebrated arbor day and he lost a bet to tim glomb and had to wrestle these two big guys in masks. You were just the most chillaxinist out of all of them from the show and the worst thing is that you died 8 days after my birthday. I watched Ryan along with all the other Jackass and CKY guys with my son for over ten years and loved every minute of it. Ryan one always one of my favorites because he would try anything just to entertain. He had such a wonderful smile and laugh. I miss him terribly as I am sure do all his close friends and family. the loss of ryan Dunn touched more people in my opinion than the death of michael jackson. Ryan Dunn was the best friend we all wanted, i know i did when i was in high school. i think we felt close to him because we saw more of his body and bodily fluids than we do of our "real life" best friends, we've seen him laugh and cry, we saw what a good friend he was to bam and the rest of the jackass family.
